In order to improve the students’ Chinese of the Chinese language department at the University of Nouakchott in Mauritania and enhance their understanding of Chinese culture and national conditions, the College of International Exchange and Education/ Confucius Institute Center and the Confucius Institute at University of Nouakchott recently jointly organized a four-week online “Cloud Classroom” of Chinese language education.

This “Cloud Classroom” training covers many aspects, such as “contemporary China”, “special festivals”, “studying in China”, “Chinese clothing”, “daily communication” and “travelling to China”. To ensure that the classes can be conducted smoothly and facilitate communication, teachers and students in our school overcame the eight-hour time difference and gave lectures through social media platform, WeChat. The teachers focused on interactive communication with the students and gave each student the opportunity to open their mouths to speak Chinese, thus maximizing their communicative skills in Chinese. The students’ zest for learning went beyond the expectations of the teaching team and they were eager to learn more about China. They enhanced their mutual understanding through positive interaction. At the end of the course, the participants said they had gained a lot. The sophomore students even danced a Mauritanian folk dance and sang Chinese songs for teachers. The Chinese Language department at the University of Nouakchott took the “cloud classroom” as a platform and a new way to improve students Chinese during the COVID-19 period.

The online "cloud classroom" of Chinese education is one of the activities of the Confucius Institute Center’s “14th Five-Year Plan” opening project, entitled “Targeted Innovation and Development of International Chinese Online Education”. The College of International Exchange and Education/Confucius Institute Center will further summarize the experience of distance and cross-border teaching, as well as explore the appropriate online mode as a new method for postgraduate education reform and for the educational cooperation between China and the US in the post-epidemic era.
